video game OSTs: not just for geeks
Being the huge music geek that I am, in addition to my Epic Gamer status, it's come to my attention that there's a terrible lack of video game music in music rec posts. While it may not be as widely accepted as, say, movie soundtracks, much video game music is definitely as legit and is quickly coming into its own as a marketable medium. Partly to fill the gap of vg OST recs, and partly to show you lovelies what I'm listening to right now (and have been for years), I present downloads!
Music Recs: The Final Fantasy Edition
NOTE:There are TONS of different versions of Final Fantasy music. The legend is as follows:
OST - original soundtrack, as the song was in the original game (or movie, in the case of FFVII: Advent Children).
PC - piano collections, song as performed on the FF piano collection albums.
TBM - The Black Mages, song as performed by Nobuo Uematsu's video game rock band, The Black Mages.
FLWV - FITHOS LUSEC WECOS VINOSEC, song as performed on the album FITHOS LUSEC WECOS VINOSEC, full orchestra.
Reunion - song as performed on the Final Fantasy VII: Reunion album, full orchestra.
Final Fantasy VII
Those Who Fight (PC)
I picked this version over others because it's not as dated as in the OST, and it's not unrecognizable like in Advent Children. Anyways, this is the battle theme, but what's great about it is it's so wonderfully listenable that it's very hard to get tired of it within the context of the game (a good thing since you hear it at every random encounter). Very catchy!
Those Who Fight Further (TBM)
Boss battle theme music and a very kickass song in general. The original version lent itself very well to this rock adaptation. I often listen to it when doing busywork ^__^
Main Theme (Reunion)
My absolute, hands-down favorite song out of any FF OST. It might be lightly attributed to nostalgia, but it's equal parts gorgeous and unsettling.
Aerith's Theme (Reunion)
Also very beautiful and sad, oh god. Appropriate since *spoiler alert* its played when Aerith dies.
One-Winged Angel (Reunion)
The standard by which every villain theme should be measured, as far as I'm concerned. Epic and operatic, TYMPANI. CHOIR. LATIN. DID I MENTION IT'S FUCKING ?
*FFVII: Advent Children
Highway Chase (OST)
Sort of standard rock soundtrack-y stuff, but it has some great moments, especially the reprisal of the Turks theme.
J-E-N-O-V-A (OST)
I picked this version since it's the most accessible one (though I do love the original since it's technoed out), but if there was one must-have I could recommend of all these songs, this is probably it. It's rock, it fucking drives, and there's bonus synthesizer. What's not to love?
*FFVII: Crisis Core
Wandering on a Sunny Afternoon
Though Uematsu didn't do the OST for Crisis Core, fun little songs like this make me think we'll be alright without him should he ever choose to leave ^__^
To A New Post
Complete string quartet material, so it tickles the classical music geek inside me <3
A Closed Off Village
A reworking of an OST track called Anxiety (known to FFVII gamers as That Creepy-ass Music In Nibelheim). VERY creeptastically atmospheric.
Melody of Resolution
I'M RUNNING OUT OF GOOD THINGS TO SAY. Piano. Violin. Dissonance = awesome.
Living Legacy
A little delicious medley of themes, including the only known full orchestra arrangement of Those Who Fight and Shin-Ra's Theme ;__; I really wish they'd do complete versions someday.
Final Fantasy VIII
Liberi Fatali (OST)
Very much like One-Winged Angel in its epicness, as it has many of the same elements: choir, a grand scale, sweeping melody, etc. Absolutely wunderbar ♥
EDIT I HAS VIDEO
Blue Fields (FLWV)
Another nice one, very simple and effective and features SEXYSEXY oboe ^__^ (or English horn. There are times when I can't distinguish)
Force Your Way (TBM)
One of the few Black Mages guitar solos that actually fits the track, but anyways, another fast tempo track that does wonders for making time pass quickly.
Man With The Machine Gun (FLWV) (OST)
I'm providing two different versions of this since they're both freaking awesome ^__^ The first features orchestra, so it's fun to hear them mix classical elements with what was originally a techno beat. The second file is the original with said techno, and it runs a little long since it's meant to be looped, but that's where the skip button is useful. And I miss the little electronic claps in the orchestral version :-)
The Oath (FLWV)
Final Fantasy IX
Bran Bal, The Soulless Village (PC)
Eerie as all hell, but pretty :D
Two Hearts Not Captured (PC)
Kuja's Theme ~ Millenium Version (OST)
Final Fantasy X
Fight With Seymour (TBM)
MOAR TECHNO
To Zanarkand (OST)
Also runs a little long, but v. lovely.
The Sending (OST)
Otherworld (OST)
The first thing Uematsu ever did that might be considered metal--not a genre I'm strictly into, per se, but it was a great way to kick off the game ^__^
Suteki Da Ne (OST)
Assault (PC)
Okay, so I got lazier with the descriptions as I went along, but take if you want! Don't look down your nose, I'M TRYING TO BROADEN HORIZONS, HERE ;-)
