mezzanineview: ([TW] THE PHONES AREN'T WORKING OKAY?)

Okay, people, here's my opinion.

On principle, I like both Panic!'s and The Young Veins' new songs, but neither are as good as when they were together. Kind of like how Lennon and McCartney and Harrison and Starr were never quite the same post-Beatles.

Brendon's voice remains gorgeous and I'm liking the energy of New Perspective, but it does sound rather generic, as far as pop bands go. On the same token, I've never had a huge issue with Ryan's singing and, as I am a huge classic rock fan and love it when modern bands go retro, Change is a little too straightforward, and feels like a backhand to his former bandmates, honestly. The lyrics in both are uninspired, though I can dig on New Perspective a bit more.

Thoughts, my lovelies?

basically this. neither is as good as them together. i'm into the jon/ryan musical style more, but bden's voice will pretty much win anything for me. patd is now poppier than i'd like, but tyv is an early 60s rip-off of the who & the lyrics on both sides make me facepalm.

it's weird. the number of people who'll be supporting tyv & listening to their stuff because of the guys' former band membership. just wondering how well they would have done coming up with that stuff straight off. their fanbase would've been hugely different & much smaller. not a bad thing or a good thing, just an observation, there.

'new perspective' made me wince at first listen, whereas i listened to 'change' four times in a row & was digging it straight away. buuuut 'new perspective' is now stuck in my head, & i can't even remeber how 'change' goes.

mostly, i just think brendon's voice makes everything better. he's a singer, & that makes all the difference.

a rational opinion! I pretty much agree with your first paragraph. They're pretty good but it won't be the same as when they're together. But that's okay. I'm happy as long as they make music I enjoy, and I seemingly enjoy both songs

Change is a little too straightforward

This.
I feel pretty much the same, I like New Perspectives better but neither are topping out each other. But as someone who's not the biggest fan of bands going ~retro the first time I heard Change my reaction was "...no, Ryan Ross. No."

I kind of fall on the opposite side, but with mostly the same perspectives. I like Change a lot more, though I miss Brendon's voice, mostly because I don't know that Ryan's has the substance to carry the songs in the style they are working. I'd honestly like to hear Jon sing some of the songs. In any case, B&S (B.S., haha) sounds way too pop to me, which makes me sad, as so far, I kind of feel like they're the ones being a bit more mature lately.

And really, songs essentially about the same thing on the same day? Huh.
